Rather than a straightforward guide to the collections, this lavishly illustrated publication sheds light on the history of the museum itself, as well as that of its holdings. To this end four authors offer original essays on episodes that have shaped the collection's development. Complimenting these essays are 120 selected works presented in order of their acquisition number (NAC) which indicates which year they became part of the collection. This unusual way of arranging the catalog entries contrasts with the chronological and typological ordering generally imposed by art historical convention. In contrast, it offers an accurate view of the diversity of styles and forms collected by the museum throughout its history. Archaeological objects and art works - historical and contemporary - originating in Europe and Canada are juxtaposed without regard for thematic or temporal categories, thus highlighting the unique manner in which this collection has been constituted and mirroring the history of the institution that serves as its setting.
