"L'année commença par un déjeuner. A midi et demi, le petit restaurant était complet. On pouvait admirer là quelques sérieux convives : des familles entières avec cet embonpoint qu'on acquiert à passer tous les jours deux ou trois heures à table, les yeux sur l'assiette et les conversations remises à plus tard. Le patron du restaurant, un homme qui, malgré sa corpulence, avait poussé à la perfection l'art de virevolter dans son établissement, avait revêtu une tenue de circonstance : veste de smoking en velours et nœud papillon. Sa moustache pommadée frémissait d'enthousiasme tandis qu'il récitait le menu comme on entonne une rhapsodie : c'était une aria gastronomique qu'il attaquait à chaque table en se baisant le bout des doigts avec un tel entrain qu'il devait en avoir les lèvres gercées. Pendant le déjeuner, ma femme et moi songions à de précédents jours de l'an, passés sous les nuages impénétrables du ciel anglais. On avait du mal à associer Au 1er Janvier l'éclatant soleil et le ciel d'un bleu indigo. Tout le monde pourtant nous le répétait : c'était absolument normal. Après tout, nous étions en Provence.... ".
