21.: Panzerdivision - Hardcover

In February 1941, the German High Command decided to despatch an extraordinary force to North Africa in support of the Italian forces which were in a difficult situation against the British. This contingent included elements that a few months later were to form the 5th Light Division, and (in 1942) the 21st Panzer Division. As a keystone of the Deutsches Afrika Korps, this armoured division was involved in the hardest battles of that theatre of World war Two, until it was finally driven out of North Africa along with the rest of the Axis forces in May 1943. The 21st then regrouped in France, where it was poorly equipped but showed great initiative in turning salvaged French and German tanks into formidable fighting weapons. On D-Day, 21 Panzer Division was heavily involved in the counter attack against the Allied landings: it held up the British attempt to capture Caen for a whole month. Finally, the 21st was despatched to the eastern front, where it was annihilated in the Halbe pocket shortly before the end of the war.

Dès février 1941, la 5 Leichte-Division, le noyau de la future 21 Panzerdivision, est la première unité allemande à mettre le pied sur le sol africain pour une campagne qui va durer plus de deux années. Sous les ordres d'un chef prestigieux, Erwin Rommel, en Lybie et en Egypte occidentale, elle mènera de durs combats jusqu'à l'anéantissement des forces italo-allemandes en Tunisie le 12 mai 1943. Mais une nouvelle 21 Panzerdivision, dans laquelle se retrouveront des rescapés d'Afrique, va renaître de ses cendres dès juillet 1943. Dotée pour une grande part de matériel français transformé, elle sera la première Panzerdivision à affronter le débarquement allié sur la côte au Nord de Caen dès le 6 juin 1944, et à empêcher la prise de Caen dès ce jour. La Lorraine et l'Alsace la verront ensuite aux prises avec les Américains avant son transfert sur le front de l'Est en Silésie où ses restes trouveront une fin tragique dans la poche de Halbe, au sud de Berlin. Ce sont ces combats, que cet ouvrage présente par l'image et par le texte.
