Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Raymond Depardon occupe une place singulière dans le champ de l'image contemporaine. Photographe et cinéaste mondialement célèbre, il est l'auteur d'une oeuvre qui mêle depuis plusieurs décennies les projets au long cours, le noir et blanc, la couleur, le film documentaire et la fiction. Sa passion pour la technique, ses interrogations permanentes sur l'éthique et l'esthétique, ou encore ses repères autobiographiques sont autant de marqueurs essentiels dans ce parcours jalonné régulièrement par le goût de l'écriture et l'envie de donner la parole.

Né en 1932 à Paris, Paul Virilio est professeur à l'Ecole spéciale d'architecture à Paris, dont il a été le directeur et président entre 1968 et 1998. Urbaniste, spécialiste des questions stratégiques relatives aux nouvelles technologies et à l'espace métropolitain, et membre du Haut Comité pour le logement des défavorisés depuis 1992, Paul Virilio est le penseur de la vitesse, de l'accélération du temps mondial.

Created by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, the exhibition Native Land, Stop Eject proposes a dialogue between fi lmmaker Raymond Depardon and philosopher Paul Virilio on the notions of being rooted and uprooted today, an epoch in which human migration flows are taking place on an unprecedented scale. In his film Hear Them Speak, created with Claudine Nougaret, Raymond Depardon gives a voice to those who wish to remain on their land but are threatened with exile. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan, and Ben Rubin give form to Paul Virilio's concepts in six dynamic maps which examine new trends in contemporary human movement due to environmental, political, and economic factors.
The texts included here, published for the first time in the catalog Native Land, Stop Eject (Prix Nomad's 2009), offer a chance to explore the themes raised in the exhibition. Accompanied by exhibition views, they incite contemplation on the meaning of sedentariness and nomadism, as well as related questions of identity.

Conversation between Raymond Depardon and Pau l Virilio. The exhibition Native Land, Stop Eject was originally presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris in 2008 and subsequently at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, from December 5, 2009 to February 21, 2010, during the COP15 Climate Change Conference organized by the United Nations.
