Fontevraud est le plus grand ensemble monastique subsistant en France. Fondé par Robert d'Arbrissel au XIIe siècle et inspiré par la règle bénédictine, cet ordre regroupe alors 4 monastères dont 3 réservés aux femmes. Du Moyen Âge à la Révolution, 36 abbesses vont se succéder à la tête de l'ordre. Au XVIIIe siècle, l'abbaye est un pensionnat féminin réputé, qui accueille notamment les filles de Louis XV. Après la Révolution, Fontevraud est transformé en prison. En 1840, Prosper Mérimée inscrit l'abbaye sur la liste des monuments historiques à conserver. Depuis 1975, Fontevraud héberge une association à vocation culturelle.
