Rose meurt le jour où Mélie a douze ans et ses premières règles. Alors Mélie quitte le magasin de souvenirs de l'Ermitage pour aller à Oat - prononcer " 0-at " - au bord de la mer, avec dans son sac le livre de légendes, cadeau de Rose. Il y a deux côtés à Oat : le côté de la lagune et des très vieux : Nem, Mélie, et des vieux : le brocanteur, le photographe ; et le côté du port avec Pim, Yem, Cob, mademoiselle Marthe. Mélie vit au 7 rue des Charmes, va aux goûters dansants du Continental, va une fois au Bastringue, puis découvre la plage aux Mouettes. Elle a toujours avec elle son polaroïd, pour les douze photos qu'elle aura à faire en écrivant au dos la légende, et en les glissant l'une après l'autre dans son livre de légendes, pour Rose. Rose Mélie Rose clôt le triptyque dont Splendid Hôtel et Forever Valley forment les deux premiers volets.
