Cheri and The Last Of Cheri involve a tragic/comic love affair. Colette (1873-1954) is the pseudonym for Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. She is best known in English speaking countries for her novel Gigi, which was later the source for the Lerner & Loewe musical film and stage musical. Cheri and The Last Of Cheri are two novels concerning a love affair between a successful but aging courtesan, La de Lonval, and her spoiled young lover called Chri. The intensity of their feelings is revealed when Chri marries eighteen-year-old Marie-Laure.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Née en 1873 à Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (Yonne), Sidonie Gabrielle Colette y vit jusqu’à son mariage en 1893 avec Henri Gauthier-Villars, dit Willy. C’est lui qui l’incitera à écrire la série des quatre Claudine (1900-1904). Divorcée en 1906, elle devient mime tout en continuant à écrire – romans ou souvenirs : Les Vrilles de la vigne, La Vagabonde, Dialogues de bêtes, La Retraite sentimentale ou encore L’Envers du music-hall. Elle donne des articles au Matin dont elle épouse le rédacteur en chef, Henri de Jouvenel, en 1912. Elle divorce en 1924, se remarie en 1935 avec Maurice Goudeket. Membre de l’Académie royale de Belgique (1936) et de l’académie Goncourt (1944), elle meurt à Paris en 1954. Par son style et par l’ampleur de son œuvre, elle se classe parmi les meilleurs écrivains du XXe siècle.
