The 17 papers of this collection were first presented at a December 2004 conference held at the Centre for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals at the U. of Copenhagen, Denmark. Connected by the central themes of memory and medievalism, the essays are grouped into four sections, on authority and heritage, ritual commemoration, memory and oblivion, and artistic negotiations with the medieval heritage, with an introduction provided for each section. Artists and events are included from the Middle Ages through the 20th century, with essays on Emil Nolde, Caravaggio, and feasts and ceremonies in 15th-century France. The majority of the essays concern medieval topics related to memory, including essays on Bernard of Clairvaux, Cistercian houses, and Chrétien de Troyes. The volume is well-illustrated with b&w plates. It's distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
