En juin 1553, Du Bellay arrive à Rome que les troupes de Charles Quint ont mise à sac vingt-six ans plus tôt ; il y accompagne comme intendant le cousin de son père, le cardinal Jean Du Bellay, auquel le roi Henri II vient de confier la mission de négocier avec le pape une alliance contre Charles Quint. Et c'est pendant ce séjour romain qu'il compose - outre des poèmes en latin - l'essentiel des Regrets, des Antiquités et du Songe qu'il fait paraître en 1558, après son retour à Paris. Les sonnets des Regrets disent la plainte d'un exilé à Rome - en même temps que la pérégrination de l'âme sur terre accompagne le thème du voyage ; mais l'élégie se double aussi d'une satire contre la cour pontificale. Après quoi ce n'est plus l'exilé qui importe dans Les Antiquités, mais bien la Ville elle-même, son illustre passé comme sa déchéance présente. Vision d'un destin où le sac de 1527 annonce un châtiment plus grand : après une réflexion sur la lente dégradation de Rome, Le Songe peut alors proposer le cauchemar d'une destruction brutale.
