S'inspirant de faits historiques remontant au VIIIe siècle, la Chanson de Roland raconte comment Roland, neveu et baron de Charlemagne, a péri au cours d'une embuscade tendue par les Sarrasins alors qu'il passait, avec son armée, le col de Roncevaux, dans les Pyrénées.
