Indiana, premier roman d'une jeune femme vivant courageusement sa solitude après un mariage raté et quelques aventures aussi passionnées que décevantes, a fait George Sand et c'est à travers l'écriture que celle-ci a conquis sa liberté, sa dignité de femme, son identité même. "La cause que je défendais, dira-t-elle plus tard, est celle de la moitié du genre humain, celle du genre humain tout entier : car le malheur de la femme entraîne celui du maître". Et : "J'ai écrit Indiana avec le sentiment non raisonné, mais profond et légitime, de l'injustice et de la barbarie des lois qui régissent encore l'existence de la femme dans le mariage, dans la famille et dans la société".

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Née le 5 juillet 1804 à Paris, Aurore Dupin est la fille d'un officier des armées impériales et d'une couturière. Très tôt, elle noircit cahier sur cahier. Comme toutes les jeunes filles de son époque, elle se marie et devient mère de famille. Elle se sépare pourtant de son mari pour mener une vie indépendante, décision qui fit scandale. Ses premiers romans, "Indiana" et "Lélia", ont un immense succès : elle devient célèbre, sous le pseudonyme de George Sand. Écrivain engagé, elle revendique pour les femmes le droit au divorce, à l'égalité civile et elle s'enthousiasme pour la révolution de 1848. Sous le Second Empire, elle continue d'écrire, publiant notamment "La petite Fadette". Ses œuvres les plus connues sont ses romans «paysans» mais elle est aussi l'auteur de contes, de légendes, de romans au réalisme social très marqué et de nombreuses pièces de théâtre, ainsi que vingt-quatre volumes de correspondance ! George Sand est décédée le 8 juin 1876.
