En janvier 2006, 19 membres d’une même famille (les Andrén) sont massacrés à l’arme blanche dans un village isolé du nord de la Suède. La policière Vivi Sundberg penche pour l’acte d’un déséquilibré. Birgitta Roslin, juge à Helsingborg, s’intéresse à l’affaire car les parents adoptifs de sa mère sont parmi les victimes. Elle mène une enquête parallèle. Un ruban rouge retrouvé sur les lieux du crime la met sur la piste d’un mystérieux Chinois qui aurait séjourné la nuit du massacre dans un hôtel voisin, où il a été filmé par une caméra de vidéo-surveillance. Munie de son portrait, Birgitta Roslin le cherche en vain à Pékin. Mais son enquête maladroite dans une Chine en plein bouleversement dérange les projets (spéculation immobilière à l’approche des J.O., expansion coloniale en Afrique) d’un puissant homme d’affaires Ya RU, par ailleurs commanditaire du massacre suédois (il a vengé un ancêtre, San, maltraité en 1860 par un certain Andrén, contremaître suédois sur le chantier ferroviaire du Nevada. Ya Ru décide d’éliminer Birgitta, qui lui échappe de justesse à Londres. Et la lumière est faite sur le massacre.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Né en 1948, Henning Mankell partage sa vie entre la Suède et le Mozambique. Lauréat de nombreux prix littéraires. Outre la célèbre « série Wallander » il est l'auteur de romans sur l'Afrique ou des questions de société, de pièces de théâtre et d’ouvrages pour la jeunesse.
