This booklet, volume 5 in the ITS Occasional Lecture Series, is divided into two parts.
Part 1 (The Life) focuses on Dinneen’s Biography (An Duinníneach) first published in 1958 by Sáirséal agus Dill and co-authored by Proinsias Ó Conluain, from Co. Tyrone and Donncha Ó Céileachair from the West Cork Gaeltacht. This engages with the many aspects of Dinneen's life: his scholarship and literary endeavours; his lexicographical work; his years as a Jesuit; his Irish-language activism; and his role as a public intellectual.
Part 2 is concerned with the second edition of Dinneen’s Dictionary, ‘An Foclóir Mór’, which was published by the Irish Texts Society in 1927, twenty-three years after the publication of the first edition. This narrative details the afterlife of the dictionary and the scholars — particularly the brothers Seán Óg and Séamus Caomhánach and Risteárd Ó Foghludha — who engaged in such a meaningful with Dinneen's magnum opus in their attempts to update and improve this landmark lexicographical publication.
