Its theme preceded the fall of the Berlin wall; its principal villain came from the Balkans before Serbian hegemony exploded; it drew a link between drug dealing and Islamic terrorism before the Taliban existed. All those years ago, this thriller foresaw the Islamic threat to our western world, weaving a fictional web of mystery around an attempt on the life of a then fictional President of the United States. I never presented it for publication because the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and the end of Perestroika consigned its content to historical curiosity rather than to contemporary interest. Today I believe it has never been more timely to reread how the world was just a short time ago.
