April, 1986. While the #4 reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station was destroying itself and the way of life for millions of people in that area, Patricia Cox, an American nurse and psychologist, was barely 60 miles away from the reactor site, in Kiev, Ukraine. Like others affected by the disaster, Patricia was told almost nothing about what had happened. None of them knew then the impact it would have. Millions of lives were changed forever. A chain reaction of mistakes at the Chernobyl Station led to a chain reaction of Love, Caring, and Compassion, and many more visits by Patricia to the affected area. Feeling a call to “Do Something,” Patricia founded the Ukrainian-American Family Network, a cross-cultural humanitarian aid project, one she still operates to this day, 25 years later. CHAIN REACTION tells the unique story of this incredible project, as well as the stories, in their own words, of the people who were evacuated from near the explosion. The lasting effect of kindness and help is powerful and can give the reader renewed hope that mankind can and does still operate from the heart.
