James is fourteen and lives with his father in London. One day he takes a train to Hackney to see his grandparents but never arrives. His world rapidly becomes increasingly unfamiliar and soon he can no longer understand what people are saying. He is lost and lonely, sleeps rough and bumps into Zack, Jess and Callum who are in the same predicament. They meet Tom and Madge, an elderly couple who have also slipped through wormholes into this parallel universe, which is both familiar and terrifying at the same time. Callum, a precocious but moody science fanatic, sets to work on his laptop to try to find a way back. Together they survive accidents, illness, hunger and encounters with giant Apparitions. But their biggest threat comes from The Force, groups of vigilantes trying to control this disintegrating world. James and Jess become close, Zack is a pillar of strength but Callum is temperamental and threatens the unity of the group. James realises that alienation in their home lives has made them vulnerable to the drag of the wormholes and that positive thinking is crucial if they are to return. 'Trapped in a Parallel World' explores feelings of isolation and describes the tensions that develop when James and the others are flung together in this strange and hostile environment.
