The author was a prison officer and served in the Ghana prisons service, working at the toughest prison in Ghana, the then only medium security prison in the country, served at four other prisons before his promotion to the position of a Deputy Director of Prisons. The author has had a very unique insight into life in prison and the machinations that go on inside that small world. Anyone who has never been locked up at “Lock Up” time and has never spent time at such a strange environment will find it most difficult to grasp the full effect or impact of life behind bars. Again, those who never know the inside of a prison and the sort of life that goes on will never understand the impact that life inside has on those prisoners and ex-convicts in general. It is only the prison inmates who fully know the impact of imprisonment. Many prisoners find a return a relief from the daily struggles they faced in the outside world. Others, a very, very tiny minority, never recover from the aftershock of an imprisonment. Having spent very long periods of time with prisoners, almost literally spending time locked up with them, the author believes he has the ability to understand and analyse the effect an imprisonment has on ex-convicts This is an attempt to “appeal” to authorities to consider new approaches in the treatment of offenders; in other words, a reappraisal of imprisonment as a punishment for most convictions. Prison, imprisonment and treatment of prisoners make headlines, especially in the United Kingdom where it is viewed as a political point scoring, particularly during electioneering season. I see my work serving as a warning to all, which is why I can envisage it creating a stir Whoever reads it will want to be on the straight and narrow so as to avoid being forced to become an unwilling “Guest” of a Government, any Government.
