Graham West is a 40 something Vicar of the parish church in Random, a small Fenland town in North East Cambridgeshire. He is married to Judy, an education advisor, and they have two children, Stuart and Sally. Chapter One introduces us to the village and the family and some of the issues into which the new vicar is asked to take sides. Chapter Two reveals that rural calm is not all it seems when the Church Choir who are not all in favour of change, want make sure the Vicar understands that most have been there a lot longer than he has. Chapter Three brings the Vicar up against two issues. He does not feel comfortable with either. An attractive single woman moves to the village and creates confusion with her piano playing and her Information Technology skills. Chapter Four creates a moral dilemma when a member of the church wins the lottery. The windfall could benefit the church but will the Vicar put aside his doubts. Chapter Five illustrates a feature of many country towns when the music society tries to maintain enthusiasm for the AGM with a quiz. Chapter Six will ‘ring’ true for many churches when the bell ringers strike out for new members and leave the vicar in a quandary. Chapter Seven demonstrates Graham West’s expertise as a batsman. Games on Saturdays tend to clash with services and especially weddings. Chapter Eight involves the hierarchy of the Church of England and in particular the Archdeacon, in effect the Vicar’s boss. Chapter Nine describes a now somewhat old fashioned Harvest festival, in which the flow of new wine has unintended consequences. Chapter Ten illuminates the role of other churches in the area and how the search for ways of working together can prove somewhat difficult. Chapter Eleven picks up the music society on its annual trip to a live performance. and the Vicar turns out to be something of a hero. Chapter Twelve Christmas in the village of Random brings lots of help to set things up, some of it unexpected. Chapter Thirteen reminds us that churches need money to survive and much time is spent in devising new ways of fund raising. The Vicar realises where their priorities should be. Chapter Fourteen The church newsletter is under threat from new technology. The editor moves from opposition to developer with the support of a Sikh student.
