The two spend time together amid the beauty of a natural setting that evokes pre-war innocence and a deceptively simpler past when an undercurrent of racial prejudice went unchallenged. It takes Noah’s being attacked by a mountain lion to make both he and Ann realize how precious the gift of life is and how quickly love can be lost. The book’s real strength and universal appeal lies in its conveyance of the uniquely human qualities of maintaining hope, and purpose in the face of adversity.
