Study Guide: Heart of Darkness - Softcover

Inhaltsangabe

In May, 1890, Joseph Conrad sailed from the French sea-port of Bordeaux for the Congo, thus beginning what one of Conrad’s biographers describes as “the most traumatic journey of his life.” His experiences in the Congo had a profound effect on him. He himself said that these experiences had changed him for good. “Before the Congo I was just a mere animal”; he told a friend. What he saw in the Congo was subsequently recorded by him in Heart of Darkness, the most terrible of his short stories. (Heart of Darkness is something between a novel and a short story. It may be called a “novella”). To go through this brief masterpiece is a thrilling, frightening, and chastening experience for any sensitive reader; and every true student of literature is sensitive by training as well as by nature. Such pregnancy of language, such compactness of structure, such insight into the depths of human nature are hard to be found anywhere else in such an exquisite combination. This critical study of Conrad’s famous novella is intended to meet the examination requirements of students of English literature at universities. Heart of Darkness is a difficult book, a tough nut to crack; and an attempt has been made to crack the nut to the satisfaction of the students concerned. Important questions with complete answers should prove a great help to students.
