In 2005, fresh out of high school in South Africa and with zero alpine climbing experience, Matthew Schroeder set out on a six month solo mountaineering adventure through South America. The journey is a first-hand exploration of landscape, culture, spirituality and personal transformation, culminating in the high Andes of Peru. Starting in Patagonia, memoirs of hitch-hiking, trekking, camping, climbing and encounters with diverse peoples are intertwined with discussions on ancient and modern Latin American culture as well as philosophical reflections on the mysteries of existence. This travelogue challenges us to believe in the very best of humanity, and although the story ends in tragedy, it inspires an attitude towards life that seeks to transcend the limitations we and society impose, and a determination that goes beyond what we ordinarily expect of ourselves. Along the way, we come to realize that adventure is not merely about putting one’s life on the line in the great outdoors, but about continually extending the line you draw within yourself on how far you'll journey as a human being.
