A guide to effective management, I have adopted the pseudonym of ‘Charles Pooter’, the nobody who supposedly wrote a Victorian diary, because this dissertation is aimed not at the next Jack Welch, Ratan Tata, Alan Sugar, or any other captain of industry. Neither is it written by an aspiring Pete Drucker or Michael Porter, it’s not full of brilliant insights. Hopefully however, it will act as a prompt and encouragement for all those middle (ing) managers who know deep down what needs to be done but feel undermined by the projected image of what the market portrays as, ‘the successful manager’.
