Rauh gives the reader another tale of slavery. Juba, a plantation slave, escapes and makes his way to New Orleans. He blends into the black population and works for a man with contracts towing in ships in the New Orleans Port. Juba has to deal with love and revenge. Juba is taken in by Mr. Witrock and moves north, where he deals with revenge and Christianity.
