Jack Miller and Joyner Francisco are private investigators hired to find a missing mother and son. Their journey begins in the deserts of Nevada on a lonely stretch of highway where other people have recently started going missing. At first, the detectives' efforts prove futile, but when a mysterious man named Drakon Magi approaches them, an arrangement is made: Jack and Joyner will accompany Drakon through a portal to another world entirely; because the events percolating on Earth stem from a conflict brewing on Drakon's side of the portal—a place called New Canton. "You are to act as consultants—not cowboys," Drakon tells the two men. However, events quickly come to a head as New Canton faces an old enemy, and the differences between the two worlds, its people, and its magical properties create another layer of conflict for Jack, Joyner and Drakon to overcome.
