Did Jesus Really Say That? The Problem with John's Unique Gospel
John's Gospel is unique. Whereas the Synoptic accounts give us a fairly consistent portrayal of a man who avoids speaking publicly about himself or talking directly about his mission, John offers us something very different. How different is this picture and how do we reconcile it historically? For example, when John recounts ‘the Jews’ hotly resisting Jesus’ claims to being the Son of God on the grounds that he is equal with God (5:16-47; 10:22-42), or the band of soldiers falling to the ground when he alludes to his divine identity (18:1-11), did this actually happen? Additionally, if we think John created these stories to show us his understanding of Jesus, why did he do it as a Gospel and put words in his mouth instead of just writing a letter like Paul? This provocative book will answer these questions.
