The First Book of Beaver is a literary novel that follows in the tradition Ray Staszko established with previous works like Space Baby in the Bastard Universe and Percy in Paradise. Whatever the premise or plot line of his works, the underlying theme and purpose is to share the author’s unique view of what it means to be a human being, and the sometimes tragic nobility of the human struggle. There is again the typical merging of stark and credible realism with grand flights of fantasy and imagination. The novel is set in a world that has gone catastrophically awry as a result of climate change. It would be a mistake, however, to view climate change as the only or even the primary subject matter. The book is about how one very young boy orphaned by a devastating calamity struggles to learn and to survive without any contact from other human beings. His survival is on large part made possible by the fact that he is accepted into a colony of beavers, one of the few species that has survived the environmental holocaust. In that sense the story is an update of the legend of Romulus and Remus, with beavers playing the role of wolves. The main character, who has no name because he was separated form his parents before he was old enough to learn what it was, collects and sorts through the flotsam and jetsam of human civilization looking for clues to what happened and tools that will help him to survive. His process of learning and the inevitable misunderstandings along the way sometimes produce hysterical results. As he grows older, however, he becomes the leader of the beaver colony and finds purpose in helping them to survive in a vastly altered environment. The book chronicles his intellectual, emotional, and spiritual journey, one that ends up resurrecting some of the best and noblest of human traits from the rubble of human folly. The book blends art and science into a unique and compelling synthesis that has been praised by environmental scientists and English professors alike.
