If you enjoy a gentle, comforting, relaxing read do not open this book. It will disturb you. What seems to begin as the amusing reflections of a young man taken into care soon changes. The story becomes increasingly dark, sinister and violent. David Mason, the narrator, is a highly intelligent young man but being taken into care has made him angry. He is on track to be revenged. He is desperate to tell his tale. He is hurriedly imploring the reader to be the exception, the only one to understand him. All others in his life have betrayed him. He has decided how he must respond to what he sees as the gross injustices done to him. The manner is to be extreme. He believes it vital to ensure he carries out his planned revenge. This will be on those he believes most culpable of harming him. He has listed those he has selected. Thinking his remarkable intellect will ensure he triumphs over his adversaries, David sees himself justified to be prosecutor, judge, jury and, most significantly, executioner. The reality of his actions extends way further than anything even he envisaged. What may initially seem vain fantasy hardens into reality. During the course of one, critical year, events accelerate and begin to control him and he is drawn deeper and deeper into a world of violence, crime, illegal drugs, murder and the sexual exploitation of young girls. His supposed sexual awakening proves another deeper deceit. His delight in his seduction soon dissipates into a sordid horror. He thinks he is in blood stepped in too far. All his impressive reading, learning and intelligence no longer help him. He is left with no alternative but to act in the only way whereby he believes he can survive. Whatever choice he makes the consequences are frightening. What will be the result? Often told in language that might be expected of such a grim and brutal world as that he discovers, his story is one fraught with danger. But who will pay the final price? David believes he has finally had to confront himself and expose his true self discovery with honesty. To quote David, “I just wish this book was a fiction. If this was a novel I could end here. But it’s not a fiction or a novel.” Ironically and bitterly, is there to be a final twist even David could never have expected during his disturbing exposé ?
