Topology optimization is an exciting and powerful method for generating insightful, high-performance designs. The objectives of this text are to introduce the readers to topology optimization terminology, illustrate various sensitivity analysis techniques, and, most importantly, provide numerous examples and case-studies to illustrate the merits of topology optimization. The primary audience include senior undergraduate students, first year graduate students and practicing engineers. No prior background in topology optimization is assumed. However, a working knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA) is helpful. Pareto, a topology optimization software developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is used throughout the text to illustrate the main concepts. However, the reader could potentially use other topology optimization software capable of handling the class of problems posed in this text.

Amir M. Mirzendehdel is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where he works on design automation and manufacturing planning. He earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in 2017 and 2014 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in Mechanical Engineering. He also received his B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Iran in 2012. His research interests are in topology optimization, additive manufacturing, high-performance computing, and finite element analysis. Dr. Krishnan Suresh is the Philip and Jean Meyer Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He graduated in 1998 from Cornell with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He later served as an Engineering Manager at Kulicke and Soffa Industries, Philadelphia from 1998 through 2002. He has received numerous peer-reviewed grants, including the prestigious NSF Career award in 2007. His research interests are in topology optimization, additive manufacturing, finite element analysis and high-performance computing. He has co-authored over 90 technical papers, and received best-paper awards from ASME. He is also a co-founder of SciArt, LLC (www.sciartsoft.com), a Madison-based start-up company that creates and supports high-performance topology optimization software solutions.
