dis•or•der is dedicated to all of those (readers, poets, and writers who’ve share their stories) who suffer from a mental illness and or disorder, and suffer with sufferers, fitting the range of disorders. One in five adults experience mental illness problems every year—more than heart disease and cancer combined. Yet mental illness often goes undiagnosed and it is often not covered by insurance. Many people cannot afford treatment. The horror stories continue to be written: of adults strapped to stretchers in the halls of emergency rooms for days waiting for a bed, of children as young as ten are separated from parents while they wait for treatment, of patients discharged without adequate follow-up or support, of police officers who injure or even kill those suffering with mental illness, of those lost to suicide. Yet in addition to the horror stories there are stories and poems of hope and healing. The poems in this book shine a light on the courage of those who are changing the face of mental illness by writing about it.
