Olori Oyin Kambon, also known as Mama Oyin, is an activist poet, storyteller, playwright, and children's author whose life's work has centered the cultural, creative, and educational empowerment of Black children and families. With more than 50 years of experience in early childhood education, she devoted her career to nurturing young minds through storytelling, drama, music, and community-centered learning. Mama Oyin studied Early Childhood education at LaGuardia College in Long Island City, New York. She also pursued theater arts studies at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California, and at San Francisco State University, where she emphasized Creative Drama for Children. Her passion for performance and cultural expression led her to participate in storytelling festivals at the renowned Celebration Arts Theater. Throughout her career, Mama Oyin directed children in performances of African liberation songs and poetry at community venues throughout Sacramento, helping young people develop confidence, cultural pride, and artistic expression. In 1989, she wrote and produced a short play about a Black superhero titled The Sweeper, performed by children ages 4 to 17 at DeFremery Park in Oakland, California. Through her writing, storytelling, and artistic leadership, Mama Oyin inspires generations with messages of creativity, liberation, identity, and love for community.
