Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Garrett Stack is a teacher, writer, and communication researcher based in West Michigan He holds a master's degree from San Diego State University and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University. As an Assistant Professor of English at Ferris State University, he teaches creative and technical writing and journalism. He lives in Rockford with his wife, Claire, and twin boys. He has won writing awards and published in various literary journals. YEOMAN'S WORK is his first collection of poetry.

Saw Me Six Ways



Seven a.m. my limbs

from the drying shed

and into the stove, these

fallen arms swapped

for fried eggs. Eight,

and it's off to the dewy

mill to cut out my heart-

wood and saw it to slabs.

Slender for the siding,

shingles, a new first step

on the old landing. Stout

for beam and board, even

now I've strength enough

to bear another story.

Lunch on my stump,

cold sandwiches, hot

coffee, but don't neglect

the water in the creek,

pure enough to merit

dolorous decades

rooting through stone.

And of my fallen crown,

leave my leaves

and tender finger

tendrils where they lie.

At dusk, the children

will gather to smile

and watch them burn.
