Inhaltsangabe

Part song, part speculation, part entreaty and perhaps part prayer, Erik Richardson’s artful entwining of interconnected poems is as perceptive and tender as it is genuinely profound. Addressing the reader by turns as friend / lover / fellow voyager, the universal mysteries are presented in language that is stunning in its simplicity, even as it somehow manages to evoke an aura of starlit imagery throughout. He is like Whitman in more ways than one, and the world of poetry is richer for Richardson and this work having joined it. I urge you to obtain your own copy, with the knowledge that you’ll be thinking about it for a long time.

In Erik Richardson’s Song of Ourself, two people share their physical and spiritual love in dream and song, “pretending they are giants pretending to be normal people.” These poems celebrate how being in the moment encompasses all the world. “I cannot tell,” the narrator says “where my breath leaves off / and the gentle night wind begins / where I leave off and you begin.” “Step forth” with Richardson’s remarkable song of ourself “into sunlight – even as we dream – let us dream it so.”

Erik Richardson’s Song of Ourself delivers a shifting interior dramascape at the crossroads of image, dream and wonder. This sequence slides, laps, unfolds, opens, in language both intimate and abstract. Reading, I catch echoes of Baudelaire and Neruda as these poems sing, exhort, cajole, celebrate and whisper their hymn to the beloved.
