Software requirements engineering is the process of determining what is to be produced in a software system. It has the widely recognized goal of determining the needs for, and the intended external behavior of, a system design. University students as well as candidates for the IEEE Computer Society Cer-tificate of Proficiency exam in software requirements need to focus on the fol-lowing eight subareas of the requirements knowledge areas (KAs) [www .computer.org/web/education/certifications/2015]
Richard Hall Thayer, PhD, CSDP, has managed, lectured, researched, and taught software engineering for many years. He was a frequent traveler and provided software engineering seminars on five of the world continents. Dr. Thayer received a BSEE degree and an MS degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara in Electrical Engineering. He is an Emeritus Professor of Software Engineering at Sacramento State University and was a senior officer in the U.S. Air Force. He spent four years directing the U.S. Air Force R&D program in computer science. Dr. Thayer is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core, a Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP), and a member of the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Committee.
