About the Author:

Danny Silk serves on the Senior Leadership Team of both Bethel Church in Redding,CA and Jesus Culture in Sacramento,CA. He is the President and Co- Founder of Loving on Purpose, a ministry to families and communities worldwide. Danny is also the author of five books covering the subjects of building successful relationships, a culture of honor and strong families. Danny and Sheri married in 1984 and have three children and three grandchildren. 


Prior to studying Danny Silk's Foundations of Honor program, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on what honor is and what it looks like. After steeping myself into the content and principles taught in Foundations of Honor I realized that I had only understood the tip of the iceberg when it comes to honor. Initially, I believed honor was about treating others with dignity and respect. The Golden rule of conduct- "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." While these are certainly part of honor, Danny Silk unpacks the Golden Rule in a practical, easy to comprehend yet profound way in his interviews with some of Bethel's powerful leaders in Ministry.

In my own words, Foundations of Honor empowers you to walk out honor in your everyday interactions with others. I believe that everyone should understand the true meaning of honor because of these three principles.

The first principle is that honor produces trust. It's pretty hard to trust someone, especially a leader in your life who does not honor you. If you are an employee right now, do you trust your supervisor? If so, how do they treat you? It is likely because they treat you with honor. Let's reverse this scenario. Have you ever had a supervisor or leader in your life that you did not trust? It is likely because they treated you or others dishonorably. Perhaps they publicly criticized you, or they never followed through with their word- yet expected you to follow through on your word.

Now, honor should be given even if it isn't received. Even if or when people are hypocritical in their conduct, that should not determine if whether or not you decide to walk in honor. Follow through on your word anyway, even when the other person does not. This is true honor.

If you are in a leadership position in any form- a small group leader, entrepreneur, speaker, parent, teacher, etc. than it is especially critical that you conduct yourself honorably towards others. As a leader, you are responsible for establishing or building a culture of honor in your realm of influence. You model what you expect from others.

The second principle is that honor promotes responsibility. Confrontation is not often thought of in a positive light. However, confronting other's behavior or offering feedback to others when their behavior hurts you is very honorable. It's a critical part of creating a culture of honor. Allowing things to fester actually creates division and disunity. This in turn results in lashing out, having a negative attitude towards someone, and it can break trust. Confronting people honorably will help create a stronger connection by allowing both parties to be heard and understood.

During these confrontations, or in other words- conversations with valuable feedback, all parties are empowered to take responsibility for their part of the situation. Taking responsibility for your actions, attitudes, and behavior is very empowering and freeing. These conversations give everyone the opportunity to experience that and to improve the situation.

The third principle is that honor protects freedom. When trust is established, people feel safe to take responsibility for their actions as well as confront the behavior of others when they feel dishonored. When everyone treats others with honor there is a great freedom present. A culture of honor allows freedom to reign. Sometimes, in their freedom, people may not choose to adjust. They may choose to become defiant, disrespectful and rebellious. Honor protects that person's freedom to choose that, but will not allow it to continue in the workplace, home, etc....

I believe everyone could significantly benefit from studying Danny Silks Foundations of Honor. By understanding the true meaning of honor, you will create a culture of honor in your realm of influence. To build a stronger team, home, marriage, etc. honor is a critical part of it.
