The Light at the End of History: Reacting to Nuclear Impact presents photographs from artist Abbey Hepner’s decade-long examination of nuclear energy, the atomic bomb, and radioactive waste. By capturing distinct marks in time, Hepner makes visible the ongoing, often invisible, relationships with nuclear technologies.

This book weaves together an artistic examination of various aspects of the nuclear industry: uranium mining, atomic weapons testing, nuclear energy, radioactive waste, and nuclear medicine. The book draws on the ontology of the photographic image that bears witness to process and attempts to make visible the invisible. A connection is made between civilian and military nuclear powers through a lens that is both personal and cultural. The book presents a series of photographic works around one central theme but is created with varying approaches that link itself to the material properties of the subject such as x-rays and uranotypes (uranium prints). While there are many examples of work that have been created around the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and nuclear disasters like Chernobyl or Fukushima, there has been less social and cultural attention paid to the pervasive nuclear legacy in the U.S. This book is written from the perspective of a third-generation downwinder. At the time of the creation of this book we are in a global health crisis. Covid-19 has disrupted the world and brought health disparities to the forefront of our consciousness. Places like Chicago and Detroit, that have experienced decades of economic inequality and pollution in impoverished neighborhoods, have experienced high mortality rates from the virus. Recent studies have shown a link between the risk of death from COVID-19 in places with high levels of pollution. While public attention has been focused on the pandemic crisis, the EPA has suspended its enforcement of some environmental laws and the Trump administration has been discussing the prospect of conducting the nation's first nuclear test in 28 years. Plant Vogtle (featured in the book), has been called the “site of the nuclear renaissance.” It is the first commercial nuclear energy plant to build new nuclear reactors in 40 years. Construction on Unit 3 began in 2013 and is scheduled to go online the year of the book’s release (2021). -- Abbey Hepner ― Abbey Hepner
