Humans perceive the world by constructing mental models―telling a story, interpreting a map, reading a book. Every way we interact with the world involves mental models, whether creating new ones or building on existing models with the introduction of new information. Steven W. Gilbert received his PhD in science education from Purdue University in 1985 and has written extensively on models and modeling as a way to understand science. In addition to eight years of high school science teaching, he has been a professor of elementary and secondary science teacher education in Texas, Michigan, Indiana, and Virginia. He currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, where he writes on science education and other topics.
