[Ask, Don't Tell makes] ... exceedingly plain how questioning can be a powerful teaching tool. I was very pleased to see that every major subject-matter field was included as a place where questioning can make a tremendous difference in the depth of pupil understanding and transfer of thought from one context to ever new contexts, which is (or should be) the goal of excellence in teaching. Moreover, this shift in methodology of teaching is given relevance by vignettes drawn from real life experiences of practicing educators. I wish Socrates were alive to write an endorsement for this book, because he would give it lavish praise or, more likely, the question of why questions are so essential and effective in teaching. Artful questioning may be the most powerful tool a teacher has in her instructional toolkit to manage the class, engage students with the subject matter, encourage dialogue, and deepen understanding. Educators are encouraged to break the pattern of low-level daily procedural questioning and instead focus powerful questions that increase student engagement and insure their mastery of content and skills. Powerful questioning may engender deep, diverse, creative, and metacognitive thinking.
