The narrator of this tale is Ed, a middle-aged bookseller always on the prowl for a good story. Ed lost a good friend to suicide, and his mourning process drones on. In the midst of this stagnation, Ed finds himself unaccountably drawn to a customer in the bookshop where he works. Neither wishing to alienate this customer nor wanting to be dishonest about his feelings, Ed composes a group of unconventional letters. While addressed to one person, the letters are read by another, triggering a series of events both comic and tragic.
