From the Inside Flap:

About the Front Cover: Engine 31 on 87 Lafayette Street in downtown Manhattan, has been dubbed the finest firehouse in the world. Built in 1895 by architect Napoleon LeBraun, it closed in 1972 and now is used for administrative purposes by the city. Before it closed it was home to five units: Engine 31 was disbanded on November 25, 1972; Engine 31-2 was disbanded on July 1, 1939; Watertower 1 was disbanded on April 1, 1957; Battalion 2 is now located at Engine 24 & Truck 5; Division 1 is now located at Truck 20. LeBraun was the principal architect for the fire department between 1880 & 1895, designing forty two fire houses during that period. None are as elaborate as Engine 31 with its strong expression of Romanesque revival style. This building is now a designated as a New York City landmark.
