Gary Layne Smith is a native of Dayton, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science from what is now Texas State University, and a Master of Divinity graduate degree from Brite Divinty School, Texas Christian University, in 1984; the same year he was ordained a minister.
He served 31 years in the U.S. Air Force, the last 19 years as a chaplain, leading him to the rank of Lt. Colonel. A former faculty member at the Air Force University, Smith graduated first in a class 604 officers in an Air Force Leadership Development School. In 1993 and 1995, Abington Press published Gary's sermons as a devotional series, receiving the highest positive feedback on record from readers. Gary was also a speech writer for the Air Force Chief of Chaplains and periodically for the current U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Dr. David Sampson.
In 2003, Colonel Smith retired and moved to San Marcos, Texas where he serves as the Minister of Christ the Redeemer Church. He is also pursuing his life long love affair with writing and is considered a master story teller among his peers. Letters from Boerdonk is Gary's inaugural book with four more books currently in various stages of development.
