Living legend Hoch's ingenuity is front and center in Crippen & Landru's second collection of his beloved Dr. Sam Hawthorne short stories (after 1996's Diagnosis: Impossible). Hoch was challenged by the late Fred Dannay to make all his Hawthorne tales impossible crime puzzles, and he has proven himself more than up to the task, with stories featuring such riddles as a midair stabbing in a locked airplane cockpit and the disappearance of all occupants of a houseboat that was never out of sight of the country doctor sleuth himself. Newcomers will enjoy pitting their wits against Hoch's young but savvy detective and the seemingly supernatural crimes he routinely encounters.
