Kay Westmore knew from the beginning that getting involved with a woman fifteen years younger was asking for heartbreak. Now that Stef was leaving her, Kay wasn't surprised -- just heartsick, disillusioned, and embarrassed by the end of yet another relationship. When her boss, Secretary of the Interior Grace Perry, suddenly sends Kay on a special assignment, she welcomes the opportunity -- even though the trip will require spending several weeks in Barrow, Alaska, in the dead of winter, when the Arctic Ocean town lies in total darkness and devastating cold. But Kay can't imagine a better way to numb herself to the pain of Stef's departure.

Laura DeHart Young was born in a small town in New Jersey -- so small and obscure that she now lies and says she is a native Pennsylvanian (where she did live for over twenty years). No wonder she moved to the metro Atlanta area of almost four million people seven years ago to enjoy a vastly different living experience. Now she yearns for vacations in the north GA mountains where there is no traffic and far fewer people.
When not writing and working for a technology company headquartered north of Atlanta, Laura collects famous autographs (Lucille Ball, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Sally Field just to name a very few) and dabbles in digital photography. She also loves travel, attending LPGA golf tournaments, reading, spending time with family, gardening, staring at her fresh water aquarium, and relaxing in the beautiful sunroom of her new home.
Laura’s constant companion for the past thirteen years was her beloved pug, Dudley. Sadly, Dudley passed away in August, 2004. Since that time, Laura and her partner of eight years, Jerri, have adopted three pug girls (Dudley would have loved them) -- Sherri, Belle and Abby.
