Richard Garcia has a following among fans of surrealist poetry, particularly prose poetry. He teaches in the Antioch University Los Angeles MFA Low Residency Program and is on the teaching staff of the Idyllwild Poetry Festival. He lives in South Carolina and conducts private workshops there as well. Garcia is well-known and highly readable poet, making him accessible to poetry fans and readers new to poetry. He also has a following among Latin American literature fans and many of his poems speak to issues of race and culture.

Richard Garcia is the author of three books of poetry: Selected Poems (1972); The Flying Garcias; and Rancho Notorious (BOA Editions, 2001) as well as My Aunt Otilia's Spirits, a bilingual children's book (1978). His poems have been published in more than thirty mainstream and avant-garde literary magazines, including Antioch Review, Colorado Review and Ploughshares.
