Prometheus, God of Potters, was the God who created humanity from clay. Zeus was the principal God in heaven and earth, and was called "Father of Gods and Men." Zeus considered mankind, Prometheus's creation, stupid and evil, and was determined to destroy it by freezing it, keeping fire from it. Prometheus loved his creation and stole fire from heaven and gave it to humanity to prevent its death. In doing so, Prometheus defied Zeus. As punishment, Zeus had Prometheus chained and bound to a boulder in the farthest reaches of the earth, a remote wilderness high on a cliff overlooking the sea, a place where no human being presumably ever comes. This is where our play begins. The play's theme is the struggle between tyrannical might and power, represented by Zeus, and love and kindness for humanity, represented by Prometheus.
