When he was sixteen years old Egbert Eames discovered a passion for politics based on his desire to help the underpaid and underprivileged working people of his age. He became a Liberal and mixed with the Liberal elite in their grand houses in London, then a socialist, and in the '30s a communist agitator, supporting the Spanish civil war, the fight against fascism, the struggles of China against Japan, and the Jews under Nazi rule. Discovering that many of his German friends were Jews, he helped over two hundred children escape Hitler's death camps to find safety in England. Bert fell passionately in love with a striking young woman and gave her a diamond engagement ring in 1923. Thirty three years later they married. This is a story of a family, a study of character, and a love story, through times of political and social upheaval. "Writing this book has transformed my view of my parents, my life, and myself. I see how fortunate I was in my intelligent, lively, and independent parents. I think Bert understood himself quite well, but that didn't mean he could control his emotional and volatile nature, often going too far or acting impulsively, beyond the bounds of sense or morality. As I write, I am finding out more about my father. And in uncovering him, I find I am uncovering a part of myself." Lida Logan
