Winner of the Stanner Award in 2013, Carlson's work examines contemporary Aboriginal identity, utilising historical research, interviews, and surveys. It discusses how Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal perspectives shape understandings of Aboriginality, highlighting narrow definitions that persist from Australia's colonial history. The text addresses community and external tensions regarding identity measures and the effects of identification.
