Are your children muddled by millions, and baffled by billions? Then this is the book for you!

How to Read Big Numbers: Rhymes and puzzles to help you read millions, billions and even centillions is an engaging rhyme and activity book designed to help children master large numbers. Combining colourful and engaging images with fun poems and simple exercises, the book is the perfect way to support children's maths learning at home.

People have been naming numbers for as long as we’ve had language. We talk in “billions” when discussing the accumulated wealth of the richest men in the world and “trillions” when talking about national debt. You might even have heard that the Orion Nebula is approximately 7 quadrillion miles away.

Despite their common usage, many people find such large numbers daunting. Lots of people (not just children) struggle to remember how many zeros there are in a million, billion or trillion. The issue is made harder by the fact that until the mid-1970s, a billion meant different things in the United States and the United Kingdom. In British English, a billion used to be equivalent to a million million (i.e. 1,000,000,000,000), while in American English it has always equated to a thousand million (i.e. 1,000,000,000).

Thankfully, Britain has now adopted the American system, and a billion now means the same thing -- that is, a thousand million -- in both the UK and the US. (The same sort of change has taken place with the meaning of trillion, which was previously taken to mean a million million million in the UK, but a million million in the US).

Numbers are often intimidating and confusing, especially when they are really big. This book provides a step-by-step, easy-to-follow method that children can use to both read and write large numbers with ease. By focusing on the commas that separate the digits, children quickly see that the number names change with every three digits we add, and learn why there is no such number as, say, “one thousand million”.How to Read Big Numbers is a helpful and engaging maths book full of puzzles and rhymes that will help demystify these large numbers. Enjoy!
