9781916202115: Arabian Gulf Sayings: A Guide to Life through Desert Arab Proverbs (Arabian Culture)

Inhaltsangabe

This book is a compilation of sayings and proverbs that have been collected whilst travelling the Arabian Gulf over a period of ten years. It provides a glimpse of what is important in Arabian life, as transmitted from generation to generation and forms part of a rich and enduring oral art form. These sayings and proverbs are almost a revelation, which form an unbroken ‘golden thread’ that stretches long into the past and culture of the Arabian Peninsula. They are essentially as they were uttered and then translated into English.

Normally, they are used during discussions in the majlis (defined seating area) or isbah (desert camp), whilst others form part of tales that are told and retold as if they had happened recently. The book is intended to be used by visitors to the Arabian Gulf, expatriate residents, locals and anyone with an interest in Arabian culture. Please use these sayings when you visit the Arabian Gulf, meet new Arab friends or indeed, anywhere. Your interest will be greatly appreciated.

“These sayings and proverbs shine a light on Arabian Gulf culture, attitudes and beliefs, and provide a unique insight. They might be referred to in the modern lexicon as essential life-hacks” – Sara Johnson, British Middle Eastern Entrepreneur, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Paul McIvor is: a Doctor of Philosophy; holds a master’s degree in International Relations; a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst; a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society and has been granted The Freedom of The City of London. He has spent the last ten years living in and travelling the Arabian Gulf; absorbing Bedu (Bedouin) culture and being welcomed into majlis, families and lives. During this time, he has made a number of Gulf Arab and Bedu friends who refer to him by the local name ‘Rashid Bo Sah-nayda’ and have declared – “You are one of us”.
