I’m a sucker for a story with an element of fantasy, a twist to reality or an awakening. Tales that give your imagination a prod and get you thinking.
Books like “Bridge to Terabithia,” or “Knife,” really get me excited. And now I’ve got to add “The Redcroft Journals” to that list.
This is a combination of all sorts of my favourite topics, without giving too much away it mingles coming of age, friendship, mysterious characters and the search for answers in a melange of fantasy and the supernatural. People discover that they can do things they never imagined. Yet it does it in a way that is totally believable.
We’re off on a quest here, and there are great moments of suspense, humour and sadness mingled with the mundane normality of village life. And that’s what makes it so clever, most of us experience normality, this shows how close we all could be to adventure. These characters could easily live next door! We could have gifts we’ve not discovered yet and a use for them.
By the time I got to halfway, the developing relationship between the main characters was intriguing me so much. I knew that I would have to get the second book to see what’s going to happen next. And then the big twist at the end, brilliantly done!

I read a lot of fantasy fiction and am always on the look out for a great new series to start. This book really delivered. The characters were interesting and relatable and I loved the whole concept of interdependence between the two main characters. Eden has created a world (or small village) full of mystery, intrigue and fascinating powers which drew me in but didn't leave me feeling like the main characters could accomplish anything or just act as they pleased.

The story is a fantastic insight into the mind of teenager Zak and the selfless adventure he finds himself embarking on with his *not* girlfriend – well maybe – certainly if they come out of this alive!
The plot line delivers a steady momentum that offers suspense and relief at just the right moments, interweaving important historical events, day-to-day details and glimpses into hidden realms. All this leads to an ending to the first book that brings us safely back to the present moment – but with a twist!

I bought The Redcroft Journals 'The Missing Journal' for my granddaughter who is ten and thought that I'd read it myself ahead of giving it to her...just to check it for suitability. What a great read - I was drawn into the story right from the start and enjoyed it enormously. It has plot, pace and more than a few surprises... the characters are so believable ...once I'd read the first novel nothing would do but that I immediately read the second book in the series! I can't wait for the third book to be ready.
