The classic interviews with the men and women who shaped so much of 20th century photography.
In the early 1970s Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper carried out an extraordinary series of interviews. More than 20 photographers participated: Ansel Adams, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andrés Kertész, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, George Rodger, Robert Doisneau, Herbert Bayer, Henry Holmes Smith, Helmut Gernsheim, Brett Weston, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Eliot Porter, W. Eugene Smith, Laura Gilpin, Paul Strand, Imogen Cunningham, Wynn Bullock, Minor White, and Beaumont Newhall.
Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper began to interview some of the 'movers and shakers' of 20th Century photography when they were teaching colleagues at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in the 1970s. Paul went on to head that course and Thomas, originally from California, settled in Scotland where he founded the highly influential fine art photography course at Glasgow School of Art. He, like Paul, has exhibited all over the world and has work in international collections. He is currently research professor at GSA. Paul created the first residential photography workshop in the UK and later one of the first MAs in photography. Awarded an MBE in 1996, his extensive archive was acquired by the Library of Birmingham in 2004.
